what do you think of this story?

Question by bobbyr19130: what do you think of this story?
GOSHEN, Ind. É Sylvester Outley knows the harsh realities of drug addiction and street life, but he also understands the power of transformation. Once one of the ten most wanted criminals in Texas, Outley, a 1969 Goshen College graduate now is founder and director of SELF Inc., one of the largest drug rehabilitation programs in Philadelphia, Pa.

Outley, along with Ed Î57 and Theo Hartzler Yoder Î58 of Archbold, Ohio, and Kathleen Zehr Î40 of Lowville, N.Y., will receive Goshen CollegeÎs most prestigious alumni award Ë the Culture for Service Award, named after the collegeÎs motto Ë during Alumni Weekend Oct. 4-6.

Outley will talk to students and the public in a convocation at 10 a.m. Oct. 4 in the collegeÎs Church-Chapel; his speech is titled øFaith Works.Ó During the convocation, two Goshen College students will receive Barnabas Servant Leadership Awards for their on- and off-campus service to others.

By age 30, Outley had been arrested 86 times for drug involvement and swindling, and was eventually sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in 1955 Ë years of paradox which he later said were dehumanizing, yet gave him self-understanding, allowing him to transcend drugs and gain meaning in life.

He earned his G.E.D. and graduated from Goshen with a social work major. He earned masterÎs and doctorate degrees before founding the Socio-Emotional Learning and Family Center in Chester County, Pa., a therapeutic residential program for criminals, as well as Outley Professional Services, an outpatient drug and alcohol facility in Philadelphia, which became SELF.

SELF now has a $ 4 million annual budget, encompassing emergency shelters, peer outreach, transitional housing and community revitalization programs. More than just sobriety training, SELF teaches that addicts must use the basic life principles of love, respect, truth, honesty, care, compassion and forgiveness to rebuild individual lives.

Advice and 411 with Child Custody?

Question by Theresa: Advice and 411 with Child Custody?
Me and my husband are both 26. My husband works and I am a stay at home mom but I get unemployment from my previous job of 7 years. We do not smoke, drink, or do drugs nor have we ever done any of those expect drinking with friends maybe 3 times a year. lol. We provide a clean safe home and our children are very well taken care of. We both have cars and drivers licenses. I have a 5 year old, a 2 year old and a 3 month old. The 2 year old is a boy and he was from a previous marriage of 1 year which ended up in a dissolution. We have a custody agreement of shared parenting. the shared parenting was basically to just agree and get the divorce settled. It was 2009 when our dissolution was granted. He has never had a “home”. he has always lived here and there. I have been very careful as to when and where I will send my son. Theres been times where he hasn’t seen him in months. He has 3 other children to 2 other women. He has never been able to keep a job. hes over 2000 dollars behind in child support with me and im not sure how far behind he is with the other 3 children. He does not have his drivers license due to a DUI that resulted in him wrecking into a car and having no insurance. He has served jail time for that and still has not paid his fee’s. He has a history of drug abuse which I know consists of pot but i have heard from very reliable sources that he has done coke and crack. Recently he has “tried” to change and went to a rehab out of the state. He made everyone believe he was going to change and wasn’t coming back until he was. Well after 2 weeks he is back in town and is demanding to see our son. He is living in a bad neighborhood with a girl that i do not know. I am going to file papers for a “motion to change visitation”. I would like full custody. I no longer want my son to have to deal with that. I want my son to see his father but right now he can’t take care of himself. I live in Ohio. Would the judge, based on the info provided, rule in my favor? I am scared for my sons well being and safety but have been told that if he can pass a drug test that they wont grant it. He says hes been clean for 2 weeks….but i know that it wont last. I need help!

He has an unstable home, you don’t know where he lives because he moves all the time. He is living with a girl he is not married to. He has a documented history of drug behavior and erratic visitation.

I would ask for the modification of the court order to make his visitation supervised. we have my step son’s mother on every other saturday for 3 hours, supervised by me or my husband. In hindsight I would have made it a supervised visitation center to cut down on the bull…but anyway, she also can’t be more than 30 minutes late or the visitation is void.

Based solely on the fact that he doesn’t know the kid you should be granted a temporary order….but file soon, and offer the supervised visit to him now, just make sure it isn’t during a time he would have had the child.

Ohio doesn’t have joint custody, so you are pretty much in control there.

Prescription Drugs High question?

Question by : Prescription Drugs High question?
Doing a project for school, and i need to know how long the high is for when you take prescription drugs.

Best answer:

Answer by Stacey Hudson
I depend upon the drugs.

Answer by mildred f
What kind of prescription drugs? Generally medicines do not produce a high even when overdosed. There are BP medicines, for example. Do you mean this?

If you intended to find out about narcotics, then you have to ask someone who does healthcare to help you. The high is not what healthcare people are looking for. The idea is to balance the pain the person is having with the amount of narcotic. So there is no high or even a sensation of being high. When properly adjusted, the person feels normal and functions normally. Before the narcotic, they did not function normally. This situation is common; there is no addiction when the narcotic is removed.

Is Narconon an effective/safe/trust worthy rehabilitation process?

Question by Erin: Is Narconon an effective/safe/trust worthy rehabilitation process?
Recently my parents sent my brother to a Narconon rehabilitation center in Michigan and now that he’s been there for a few days we found out it was connected to Scientology. We’ve discovered it has had a lot of controversy (like being a fraud for getting members) and he’s had some complaints of odd treatment like staring into someone’s eyes for thirty minutes. Before we sent him there they even said they weren’t Scientologists.

I just want to know if it is effective and safe, and if Scientology is taught or even mentioned there. I’ve read all the stories and websites about it, but is there anybody who has actually physically been there to know what it’s like?

Best answer:

Answer by Will
Here’s an article I found.

Answer by Alex
Narconon uses dangerous unscientific methods to treat patients. For example, patients are being given toxic doses of Vitamin B (niacin).

There was a large investigation of it a few years ago: http://www.nypress.com/article-16488-the-rundown-on-scientologys-purification-rundown.html

And here is a more recent blog post from Canada: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2010/12/17/929734/-Holiday-Rehab-with-Narconon

Your brother is being brainwashed to become a scientologist. I would recommend getting him out and asking for a refund.
