Recovery from addiction is actually a life-long process. This is because addiction is a chronic illness and the patient is susceptible to going into relapse. As for the treatment, how long it would take will have to depend upon the needs of your friend and how he responds to the treatment program.

Every person is different. He’ll be done with it when he’s ready and when he’s meant to be done with it. Don’t rush it, or when he comes out of Rehab, it’ll be like he was never there to begin with.

the rest of that persons life to recover, once your addicted to something its very easy to relaps, so you never really “recover” just adapt. cant really time the release of rehab, all depends on how that person is adapting and responding.

Have you ever heard the song “Hotel California” by the Eagles? It’s true what the last verse of the song says: “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave”. Your friend may go into a “remission” of sorts, but he will be an alcoholic for the rest of his life. The first person is right, it is a lifelong battle. Good luck to your friend, and congrats on him wanting help.

most rehab places won’t keep anyone longer than 30 days. in fact most are pushing only about 7-10 days for insurance reasons. For 1 dollar per meeting he can go to a.a. and use that as his support. why are you worried about how long it will be before he gets out? do you miss partying with him? does he buy you drinks? Let him stay as long as he needs and when he is out he is going to need a LOT of time to figure things out. I think of rehab as a way to dry up…the real rehab begins when you get out of the protection of rehab and have to face the real world. This is where his lifetime rehab will take place and it is going to last him a lifetime.
