But I can’t stop the cravings. I have 3 days clean today, I want to use so bad, but im not because I removed all money and gave my house keys and car to a friend. I dont know any drug dealer who will come out for free. Tonight i feel free.

Answer by Amy Gallant
I have no experience with crack, but I do with other addictive drugs, so I’ll just take those experiences and magnify them 1,000 times… #1) Be proud of yourself. The rest of your life starts now. You can make your future much better than your past. #2) Your body is craving crack but YOU are not your body. People have out of body experiences and remember things when they were brain-dead because they are NOT their bodies.

Still, how our bodies feel affects our mood greatly so I’d recommend deep breathing, meditation, and other things that can get you in touch with your body and feel better. I remember going to a Zen Center once and the meditation was *honestly* much better than narcotics (even when they were at their best). Our minds are capable of much more than we know. Unfortunately, I often fall back into bad mental habits instead of feeling the aware, alive, euphoria I can create on my own.

Enjoy your freedom. Even if you’re feeling awful physically, SMILE because at least this is real freedom and it will get better and better. Addiction is bondage and leads nowhere but down and down and down. Keep going up! 🙂

Question about meds not given to patient leaving rehab?

Question by goldielocks123: Question about meds not given to patient leaving rehab?
I have a son who was in rehab in Orlando. We took him out today (private facility) and the staff doctor said he released AWA (against medical advice.) They refused to give him his medications when he left. Can they do this?

Best answer:

Answer by Joe Collins
Yes they can, unfortunately. When a doctor believes that a patient isn’t following their orders or abusing the medications they easily can and will throw them out for ‘noncompliance’. It’s truly a depressing situation for the patient, especially if they needed say, buprenorphine or methadone maintenance therapy. My advice would be to seek another sub clinic (or similar) as soon as possible to prevent any possible withdrawal syndrome from increasing in severity beyond what the patient could handle. Even if they were no longer physically dependent on their medications, it would be wise to seek out another doctor and explain the situation. Usually medical professionals are pretty compassionate towards cases such as this and are willing to help those in need, assuming his health insurance covers the treatment. Also, it may be easier to seek out an outpatient treatment plan for your son that covers both psychiatric/psychological care alongside their temporary replacements for drugs of abuse if required.

If I go to rehab will they stop my Xanax and Adderall prescriptions?

Question by nic: If I go to rehab will they stop my Xanax and Adderall prescriptions?
If I go to rehab for a opiate addiction will they try take me off of my other meds? What else could it hurt if I checked into the addiction side of rehab?

Best answer:

Answer by John
Opiate addiction can be very difficult to overcome. There are a number of different schools of thought about how to effectively treat heroin dependence, and each has its merits. There are a many addiction treatment centers available providing treatment for opiate dependence. If possible, you should speak with your primary physician or psychiatrist to discuss the most appropriate treatment for your addiction. He or she can help you to develop and implement a sobriety plan that fits your specific needs.

Since you are currently taking Xanax and Adderall, seeing a doctor is definitely important. If these medications have been prescribed to you, there is most likely a reason and you don’t want to stop taking them without discussing it with the prescribing doctor first. If you have been taking them for a long time and have become physically and psychologically dependent upon them, then you are addicted to them as well as opiates.

Most treatment programs will require that you stop using all addictive substances in order to really address the underlying issues leading to addiction in the first place. This is particularly true in your case. Xanax belongs to a family of drugs called Benzodiazepines. These medications are highly addictive – both physically and emotionally, and withdrawal can be dangerous if not monitored closely by trained medical personnel. Adderall, although not as physically addictive, is highly emotionally addictive. Withdrawal from stimulants such as Adderall can result in severe depression.

Regardless, remember this: when someone enters substance abuse treatment, the goal should be to address one’s addiction – including abuse of prescription medications. The most important step is deciding that there is a problem, choosing to seek help, and doing so in a safe manner. Your ultimate goal should be to live a fulfilled life in recovery, free of substances.

It is important to note that ultimately it is you who is responsible for staying sober. Whatever recovery skills, new habits and coping mechanisms you learn during treatment must be carried on and practiced in order for long term sobriety to be achieved. To that end, attending 12-step meetings, working with a sponsor, avoiding known triggers, and using e other tools of recovery – meditation, prayer, exercise, eating healthy, being honest with yourself and others – will all help you to achieve the life in recovery you are searching for.
