http://www.women-in-need.org/ provides housing, help and hope to New York City women and their families who are homeless and disadvantaged. Through comprehensive programs such as shelter, supportive permanent housing, job training, domestic violence services, alcohol and substance abuse treatment and childcare, WIN offers the tools and guidance which allow our families to return to their communities and live independently. They have been helping people since 1983. If they can not help you, ask them for a referral to a place than can and they will be glad to help. Good luck and shame on those people’s answers who were rude to you. It is not easy to find a job, especially if you are suddenly homeless and definitely not easy in this economy. Good luck!

how to get temporary custody if your grandchild in the state of utah?

Question by mollyjillene: how to get temporary custody if your grandchild in the state of utah?
My aunt is trying to get temporary custody of her grandchild; the mother is in a state funded drug rehab center and her son (my cousin) has a history of drug abuse. My aunt has the baby now but needs to get temporary custody for the time being. We live in Utah, can anyone help?

She needs to file with the court for emergency authority to keep the child. The parents legally can GIVE that authority, but if they dispute it, then they may not.
With a court order, the state is stepping in for authority. I normally am against grandparent intervention, but there are situations where it is legitimate.
I realize she may not have the money (no one ever does) but it is likely she NEEDS an attorney to help create the petition and how to file it.

Answer by jim
She doesn’t need temporary custody. The child is staying with her for awhile. That’s fine.

If she wants custody, then she’ll want a lawyer. But it’s nearly impossible for grand parents to get custody, unless the parents agree to it.

If this is just something for while the mother is in rehab, then there’s really no point. To change custody like this will take many months. Some times it take over a year. And a few thousand to a lawyer.

A history of drug abuse does not always mean a parent is on fit. So if her point is to keep the child away from the father or the mother, she’ll have to have more then drug abuse. She would have to have real proof of very serious child abuse.

America’s drug policy sucks!!?

Question by bamafleck: America’s drug policy sucks!!?
Why are people being locked up for non-violent drug crimes. These people have a disease and the only hope for them is treatment. The annual cost for an inmate to stay in prison is about $ 25,000. The cost of an inpatient drug treatment center is $ 9,000. Yet only 40% of our prisons have drug treament programs, when 80% of inmates have a substance abuse problem!!
So who beliefs this too?
Sorry “believes”
So you’d rather have your tax dollars annually contribute to somebody in jail who will probably be back for the same offense unless treated? Give me a break. You probably never made a mistake huh? The problem with their mistake is it changed their brain functions!!
Hey martinam…do some research on addiction…And in violent crimes, punishment must come because there was an actual victim involved

What’s your question?

OK, well I think that luckily many communities are taking it upon themselves tohelp solve the problem. For instance, our local court has introduced several alternatives to jail time, including inpatient and outpatient drug treatment programs. These changes have been made in the recent legislative session. Perhaphs you should write to your local politicians and encourage moving towards the same direction in your community.

Answer by George D
A disease of their own making. IMHO, druggies and AIDs and a few others shold be rounded up and put to sleep. Why should my tax dollars pay for some sleaze bag that decided to inject or snort that stuff.
