My boyfriend has this attraction to playing poker…as of right now, he’s been at the casino for 48 hours, where he’s complaining of a headache, and planning to call out of work tomorrow, but still won’t come home. While he usually does come home with more money than he took, he’s very secretive about his activity there. And the addictive behavior is starting to concern me…he has blown off everything we had planned this weekend while he sits down there. Is this normal or am I right in feeling its a little excessive?
He came home this morning, after being gone for three days. He had to call out of work today, because he was so out of it. He took his credit card this time and lost so much that he refuses to tell me. I am so upset and confused.

No you are not over excessive. He has a problem, and he needs to fix it. It’s not right for him to blow you off. And to be there for that long is ridiculous! Sure one night is fine but that is a little over the top. Sit him down and tell him how you feel, maybe he will change. If he doesn’t take him to a counceler. Good luck.

First of all, you need to go to a licensed detox and rehabilitation center. The most important part will be to get all of the coke out of your system, and began treatment with a clean mind and body. For some people, this will seem like the hardest part. People who use every single day are accustomed to keeping a certain amount of cocaine in their body, and when the level drops below that, they have acute withdrawal symptoms and need medical help in dealing with them. However, this is not by far the hardest part.
After getting all of the drugs out of your system, its important to stay in a rehabilitation center or attend substance abuse counseling meetings. Both of these will help teach you how to deal with temptation and how to begin rebuilding your life. Reaching out for help isn’t the hard part, STAYING CLEAN IS. You’ll have to change your life completely — get a new phone number, leave your old friends behind, maybe even move into a new place. If you’re constantly surrounded by fellow users and dealers, it makes it too hard to keep saying no.
Addiction is an incurable disease. You can never be rid of cocaine addiction, you can only manage it. It takes hard work and determination. Unless a person is ready to quit and works at it, it will be almost impossible for them to stay off drugs. If this is you, you have a hard road ahead of you. But it will be more than worth it in the end. Its impossible to have a productive life and be actively using cocaine.

Aside from meth I’m not certain drug and alcohol addictions involve anything other than a life challenge. I’m reasonably confident the state of the soul is independent of drug and alcohol addictions, except possibly tweakers and blasters.
Tweakers and blasters might be a different matter, though I’m not able to say so with certainty.
My thought is that music’s good for the soul usually, except hiphop and Christian rock.
